这部电影讲的是发生在19世纪末一个英国海边小镇的故事。总觉得关于那个年代的电影，色彩都有点沉闷，这部也不例外。演员里，只认出了Ian McKellen，当然是由于甘道夫和达芬奇密码的原因。女主角长得非常干净，也很古典，眼睛非常美，有点titanic里面kate的样子。男主角是个瑞士人，但是长的似乎有点混血，所以才能演这部电影里飘洋过海的俄罗斯人。
故事讲的，是这个俄罗斯男人yanko，带着自己的满腔理想，和同伴一起踏上了从俄罗斯偷渡到美利坚的旅程。他们坐在密闭的油罐车厢里到德国汉堡，然后坐货船去往美国。可船行没多久，就遇到风暴沉了，船上的人被吹到这个小镇上，其它人都遇难了，只有在船沉没之前就被海水打下船的yanko是幸存者。
当yanko衣衫褴褛地出现在小镇，所有人都以为他是疯子，把他关在一个农场里。只有这个农场的女佣amy不嫌弃他，帮他擦洗干净，还给他面包。在之后很长一段时间里，yanko没有再见过这个他不知道名字的女孩，但是在被当作苦力不停干活的过程中，这个美丽善良的姑娘一直是他的精神支柱。
amy是个私生子，因此她在这个保守的小镇一直被人看不起，她不爱说话，活在自己的世界里，所有人都认为她性格孤僻怪异，都不喜欢她。大海是她唯一可以倾诉的对象。
amy和这个来自大海的外国人相爱，似乎是理所当然的事情。经过很多阻挠，克服了一切困难，他们终于有了自己面向大海的房子，他们结婚了。
yanko是个乐观的人，他爱说，“看我多幸运啊”。一次是在登上偷渡的火车上，对他的同伴，还有是在新婚之夜，对他的妻子。
虽然已经在这个小镇住了很长时间，可是yanko一直觉得自己被排斥，这里的人对他们并不友善，他想家，想那里热爱舞蹈的人们。
终于，在他们的儿子出生没多久后，yanko因为过度劳累染上了肺炎，在一个暴风雨的夜晚，痛苦地死去。amy只说，I will love him until the end of the world.
小男孩已经会跑了，amy带着他站在海边，告诉他，你是从海里来的。
影片结束的时候，在他们海边的小房子前面，小男孩愉快地用yanko最擅长的舞步跳着自己的舞，amy和yanko生前最好的朋友，肯尼迪医生，站在旁边微笑，身后是美丽的大海。肯尼迪医生在话外音里说，看着他，我知道yanko为什么被大海抛弃，客死在这对他充满敌意的海滩，他是为了 amy，为了爱与被爱，跨越世界。
一下子就被这句话，这样的故事感动了。他真的是幸运的。
